How Trademark Registration Works in Japan
Below is the process for trademark registration in Japan.
- Step 1 – Free Preliminary Review
- Tell us your brand name and the products or services you plan to offer in Japan. A licensed Japanese Patent Attorney will review your information and provide appropriate guidance on the next steps.

- Step 2 – Filing with the JPO
- We handle the preparation and filing on your behalf. Where applicable, we can also assist with accelerated examination procedures. All communication is conducted in English, ensuring a smooth and stress-free process.

- Step 3 – Examination by the JPO
- After the trademark application is filed, it will be examined by the Japan Patent Office (JPO). The examination process typically takes six to twelve months. If an Office Action is issued, a licensed Japanese Patent Attorney will carefully review it and recommend the suitable course of action.

- Step 4 – Registration
- If the application is approved, the JPO will issue a Notice of Allowance. However, the trademark is not officially registered at that stage. Registration is completed only after the official registration fee is paid within the deadline (30 days). We can also handle the payment procedure on your behalf. Once registered, the trademark is valid for ten years from the registration date and can be renewed indefinitely.

How Long Does It Take?
- Standard examination: 6–12 months
